PROTECT YOUR SCALP HEALTH DURING SUMMER

Every season brings its own set of challenges for scalp and hair health—but summer can be especially difficult. Between extended days spent in the sun, excessive sweat, and the possible exposure to saltwater or chlorinated pools, your scalp can take a real beating if not taken care of. Don’t worry, today we’re sharing easy but effective methods for keeping your scalp safe this summer, so your hair continues to look healthy and your scalp continues to feel cool.
Don’t Forget Sun Protection
We all know how important sunscreen is for our skin. But did you ever use it on your scalp?
Easily overlooked, the scalp is one of the most exposed areas of our body to UV rays. Excessive sun exposure doesn’t just increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer — it can also lead to dry, brittle hair and weakened strands. Fortunately, there are SPF products designed for the hair and scalp health. These lightweight, non-greasy sprays or serums give protection without residue. For extra protection, toss a wide-brimmed hat, cap, or bandana into your summer style routine—it’s a simple way to introduce an extra layer of sun protection.
Rinse Before Swim
Most of us recall to wash off following a swim in the ocean or pool. Rinsing your hair prior to swimming, however, can also be of great help. Here’s the reason: your hair is similar to a sponge. It will absorb more of the saltwater or chlorine, both of which are harmful, if it is dry. By getting your hair wet with fresh water first, you fill it up with moisture and make it less likely to take in damaging substances. Even better? Apply a leave-in conditioner or protective serum beforehand to create a barrier and lock in moisture.
How many times you should wash your scalp?
Washing your scalp too much can strip it of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. In the summer, though, heat and sweat might make you feel like shampooing more.
So how often should you wash? It depends on your activity level and exposure:
- If you spend most of your day outdoors or exercise on a daily basis, every other day washing will help to prevent sweat and buildup without over drying and maintaining the scalp health.
- On indoor days or light activity, 2–3 times a week is usually adequate.
In between washes, try using a gentle scalp massage tool—manual or electric. These tools help stimulate circulation, remove buildup, and promote healthier, stronger hair growth. Plus, they’re a great way to unwind and relax.
